Black Surf Santa Cruz (BSSC) is dedicated to creating intentional, inclusive, and supportive environments for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) within ocean and outdoor recreation spaces.
Our mission is to promote physical, spiritual, emotional, and communal healing through surfing, education, and recreation.
We center Black community members and other historically and presently excluded people of color in our programming, adhering to the guiding principle of “let’s learn together.”

Our Programs
Liberation Paddle Out
The Liberation Paddle Out (LPO) provides an annual joyous day on the beach intended to center our black and BIPOC community during Juneteenth weekend. We create & offer a safe space for our community to paddle out into the water and experience the transformative power of the ocean, many for their first time.
Prepare to Pop-Up
The Prepare to Pop-up Program (P2PUP) is a multi-session program spanning over multiple weeks. It is designed to gently help people feel more prepared and connected with the ocean before joining a Pop-Up Program.
Pop-Up Program
Pop-Up Programs are a single day surf lesson where participants learn how to surf in an inclusive environment, build community, and experience the many lessons that the ocean has to offer. All equipment, wetsuits, and snacks are provided.
