The Great Outdoors, sponsored by Chevrolet, is a series showcasing Black organizations that are on passionate missions to change the narrative of Black and Brown people in the outdoor space. In this episode, theGrio ventures out to Privates Beach, CA for some community bonding and surfing with the Black Surf Club.

 

Join us as we hang out in Santa Cruz with Black Surf Club founder Bella Bonner, whose goal is to tear down barriers that often keep our oceans segregated and create a community of healing for Black, Indigenous, and people of color in the Santa Cruz community.

WADE IN THE WATER:
A JOURNEY INTO BLACK SURFING AND AQUATIC CULTURE

Wade in the Water: The Documentary (2022) examines the often overlooked history of Africa's 1,000-year-old surf tradition spanning from Senegal to Angola. Piloted by historical experts and community leaders in the BIPOC surfing movement, this cinematic film traverses historical footage and recreations, photography, original illustrations, live-action footage, and interviews.

We can’t wait to share with you more information on our other partners and advisors, and our growing team of brilliant visionaries and leaders. Including the United Way Santa Cruz County, NAACP Santa Cruz, Blended Bridges, and the Santa Cruz Black Coalition of Justice and Racial Equity.
